Ancillary Task Research - magazine advertisement

The poster is to accompany the digipak and advertise the album. Most poster will have a clear link to the album, for example using the same colour scheme. The poster shouldn't just be a copy of the album cover but show more of what it's about. This is an A2 poster from one of last years students. I think this works really well; the text over the top of the image looks really good it's very bold and colourful which contrasts with the greyscale image behind. It's definitely different and abstract this fits with the music video which is about being a misfit in society. I think the four band members could do with being more in the foreground of the photo so it's clear on who they are and they will become more part of the poster. Back Cover Front Cover This is a poster advert for the Coldplay album a Head Full of Dreams on the front and back cover of NME magazine. The same font and colour scheme has been used of both covers to show they are cl

Ancillary Research Task - digipak

A Digipak is a type of CD packaging that is made out of several card stocks such as heavy paper or cardboard. Digipaks are often quite similar to a flip book that can sometimes have three or double parts, so that one portion of the packaging opens to the right and on to the left or opens all in one of either sides and the CD would be in the centre of the portion. Outside Cover Inside Cover This is an A grade students Digipak from last year. It is very clearly linked to the video by using the main actor on the outside cover. Having seen many  of Twenty One Pilots artwork the outside cover definitely looks like something they would produce. The inside cover is more linked to the song and doesn't fit as well with the outside or I would say the artists style. However I can see why the student chose to use the polarise effect and the photo has  obviously taken while filming. I do like the way the photo goes over both panels and the same on the outside cover.

Consumption of music videos

Since the invention of the internet, the ways of consuming music videos has grown from just being on TV channels like 4 music and MTV to social media sites, YouTube and VEVO. Many record companies and artists have social media sites were they will post teasers of new music and videos to followers with links to watch the full videos. music videos are now viewed by a mass audience. Sites like YouTube have auto play and a recommend and trending section to attract people to view other videos.

Success of music videos

Music videos are so varied nowadays that it is hard to say what constitutes success. This is likely to be due to the capability of modern technology making it easier to produce music videos and platforms like YouTube where these videos are accessible to a mass audience. There are trends in music videos for example and linear narrative and live performance. Linear narrative is used to tell the story of the song so it can add emotion to the music and create a visual image for the audience. This can also make the song more memorable. Having live performance is to promote the artist as well as the song. This can be successful as it introduces the audience to the artist and can increase their fan base. Many music videos will combine a narrative and live performance this can be very effective as well.

Filming at Maddermarket

Friday last week I spent a couple of hours filming at Maddermarket theatre with my actor. The theatre had a balcony level which I used to film an extreme high level. The actually stage wasn't quite like what I imagined so spent most of my time focused on tight angle shots and certain features like her feet, arms and face. The stage didnt have the dramatic curtains or wings like I would imagine of a theatre because this venue is used for smaller productions. The dressing rooms were really good to film in, they looked like typical dressing rooms with the lights around the mirror. The lights meant everything was clear so close up footage of her face shows her emotions clearly. With the footage I plan to cut it up into short shots to put in with her training in the ballet studio. This is the shot list I did before going to the theatre so I had some ideas of what shots I wanted to film. As I hadn't visited the theatre before it was hard to know what shots would look good.

Alok and Bruno Martini - Here Me Now

I watched this music video the other day and it has stuck in my mind since. This video has such a powerful story and really captivates the audience and provokes an emotional response. I really like the way the past and present stories flow together without confusing the viewer. The video is also really simple only 3 characters and 1 location this works because it means you aren't distracted from the story.

Location Research - The garage

The Garage is a hub for performing arts located in Norwich which supports varied artists and participants. The company rent out the ballet studios for private hire so I have sent them an email to see about hiring the space to use to film both of my actors.

Swan Queen

In swan lake it's tradition for one dancer to perform as both the white and black swan. The white and black swan are polar opposite, the white one good and pure, the black one evil and manipulative. This is similar to the my idea in that I wanted to have a character with two different personalities so I'm going to adapt this so that my character also has good and evil chracteristics in her life as well as while dancing as the black and white swan.

Swan Lake - Summary

Often considered the epitome of classical ballets, Swan Lake is a tale of love, betrayal, and the triumph of good over evil. Swan Lake tells the story of Odette, a young girl doomed by an evil sorcerer. A spell is cast over her, condemning her to be a swan during the day and a human only at night. Odette is the queen of the swans, the most beautiful of all. In order to break the spell, a young man must acclaim his undying love for her.

Chronological Key History of music video

1930  - Music started to be used in films and to make the experience of watching the film more enjoyable, this was the first sort of music videos that where seen, however are very different to the music videos that we have become used to today. 1940  - Short lips with music where showed on TV that featured jazz bands of the time, this is the first live performance style music video that  where shown and are partially the inspiration for both music videos and adverts we see today. 1965  - The beetles began releasing promotional music videos before the latest releases to help promote sales of the album. This is an early example of using extra footage to increase profit making the industry about more than just the music and performance. 1974  - MTV was released, the first time a channel dedicated to just music videos was shown on television and at the time was the only way that people viewed music videos, this channel shaped a generation and opened peoples eyes to more and new genres o

Casting

Name: Abigail Lewis  Age: 17 Abigail is a dancer and very good at ballet. She is the right age for the role and also does drama which means she will be natural on camera. However Abigail has a lot of dance auditions and rehearsals at the weekend and this means it is very hard to arrange dates to film and more of an inconvenience for her.  Name: Libby Miller Age: 18 Libby also does ballet at the same dance school as Abigail. She has the perfect figure for a ballerina and I think she would suit the role really well.  Libby doesn't do drama but she has performed in a previous short film i did and she was really confident on camera so I definitely think she would be able to get into character. This is why I have chosen Libby.

Existing Narrative

zA narrative is an account of connected events also known as a story. In music videos narratives are shorter and therefore tend to be simpler. In music videos the narrative normally focuses on a few key events of the story rather than the whole story and uses setting and costume to show the passing of time. Narrative in Genre: In this video we see a girl and boy in high school who like each other but don't admit it because they are different. In the video we see only a few key scenes the match, prom and the house to tell the story. In most videos of a romantic genre to young adults meet and have some sort of connection before at the end reaching an ultimatum. The genre of this video is family and relationships. There isn't a deep narrative to the video but it shows many different stories that reflect very varying relationships. This song is very emotional and the video uses this to promote family. Probably the most iconic MJ music video is Thriller.

Existing Performers

In music videos performers are very important. The video is normally used to promote the artist as well as the song, so the persona of the artist and the genre have a big influence on the video. Marshmello Marshmello isn't a very well known artist or performer as he's just entered the music scene, but he has a very clear unique identity from the way he appears and dresses in his videos. As a dj its very hard to separate yourself from the crowd so having your own identity makes you recognisible anywhere. Most djs, including him create their own logo to represent them, for example Aviciis' two triangles this then appears on merchandise, in their music videos and on their albums. Marshmello's videos are normally based around his skills as a dj so in that sense he definitely adds to the narrative but i wouldn't say he engages with the audience alot. Foxes Foxes is a singer and she features in all their music videos. These videos tend to have a lot more narrative a

MadderMarket theatre

I've contacted several theatres in Norwich over the past few weeks to see if their stage is available to film on. Most have been too busy because it's the run up to Christmas; but after one theatre directed me to Rebecca at Maddermarket we exchanged a few emails and have arranged a date to film there. The stage is an important location for my ballerina as there's going to be an important scene where she is imagining herself perform while practising.

Video Diary 3

Setting

Setting is the place or surroundings where an event takes place. Setting in a music video can be anything from the roof of a skyscraper to a rural field.Settings are normally all linked by some sort of theme and can be used to show the passing of time.  Props are also part of setting they can be very important and tend to have some symbolic meaning. For example seeing a character holding a gun normally symbolises they have a violent background. Conventional settings in a music video Music videos usually have a few main settings that feature throughout the music video, they are normally always linked through a theme. For example Fifth Harmony's 'work from home' video is all shot around a building site and this is it's main setting. Sigma 'higher' video uses a mountain as it's main setting and represents reaching new limits, which is what the song is about. The settings often reflect the mood of the music video, e.g. dark settings with low natural light ca

Boxer

My other main character is a boxer around the same age, she is similar to the ballerina in that boxing is her escape. She is in similar circumstances as she feels the need to prove herself through doing well in her sport. With a very important match coming up she is fighting as the underdog for her first tittle. Her parents not being over pleased with her constant training and addiction to boxing, she believes winning this match will prove it's worthwhile.

Ballerina

One of my main characters is a girl about the age of 18, who aspires to be a professional ballet dancer. In the music video she is under a lot of pressure as she is auditioning for the main part in a show for a major ballet company. You she her go through a period of self criticism and competition to achieve her goal. The process pushes her to new limits and its only her love of ballet that keeps her going. It becomes her escape and the only way she can truly express herself.

Footage

For my music video I've decided the whole thing will be based on a narrative so there will be no live performance or lip syncing. The video will be driven by the story line and the songs purpose is to compliment this.

Song Choice

I haven't been focused on choosing a song at the moment, for the video the narrative is the most important so I've been spending my time developing my characters and storyline and I want the song to reinforce the message of the video not the other way around. However I do have a few songs in mind that fit with the narrative. This song already has a strong narrative in the lyrics and because of this I would have to change my idea slightly so it just focused on the ballerina. This song is slower than I initially wanted but it is really emotional which is what I like about it. This song really caught my attention, it is very emotional but can be interpreted differently. The lyrics find me could relate to the characters expressing themselves through their sport so it definitely links to the story. This song isn't as slow as ballerina but has a good mix which will be great for sequences of short shots. This was my original song choice and my initial ideas all came fr

Southpaw training Montage

In the music video there will be a section where the boxer is training on her own. In many boxing films there is iconic training montages, one I watched recently was Southpaw. In this I really like the shots where camera angles are used to create a contrast between the natural light and him as a black silhouette. Also the shot with the quick bag which is identical to the one in the famous Rocky training montage. The camera also focuses on smaller details such as his feet or face and uses pull focus which all make the sequence interesting to watch.

Initial Ideas

I have to so initial ideas, they are similar ideas but based around two different songs. I like to mind map my ideas because this means i can link parts together and getting everything down on paper before I start adapting it. One of the main parts of mise en scene that I want to focus on more than the others is camera angles. This is going to be important especially to show the change in perspective between the characters. It will also give the video an edge.

Attleborough Boxing club

Last week I went to Attleborough boxing club to see if it would be suitable as a film location. I spoke to the head coach and manager, Jon who was very helpful and introduce me to someone called Levi Dennis, who has started full time training and is the same age as us. He said he was happy to be filmed training at the gym but when I asked if he would be up for filming outside of the gym in his spare time he didn't seem so keen. The gym itself is perfect for the type of location we wanted, with the gym and outside areas we can get lots of footage. One problem I did notice was that the lighting wasn't very dramatic and for a match low key lighting would be good to give the footage more of an edge. We will probably look in to supplying our own lights. Jon also invited us to film at Connaught hall on the 19th of November when the club is hosting 18 bouts of boxing. This would be really good footage to use for the music video so me and Rosie are planning to go.

Arts

I asked a couple of girls in my year who I knew did ballet if they would be interested in performing in our music video, they said they would be happy to which was great. They are students at Arts school, so I decided to contact the school to ask whether we could film in one of their studios. In the space of a week I received a reply from Libby's teacher Vickie, who said it would be absolutely fine to use the studio after Libby's lesson. Me and Rosie thought it would be really good to have shots of our ballerina dancing with other girls and cut between shots of this and her on her own. So I set up a group chat on Facebook and asked Libby to add some people from her class; they were very happy to help. Filming date 31st October.

Video Diary 2

Existing Student Music Video

I thought it'd be important to research other student made music video's by the same artist - Tinie Tempah - who I'm hoping to use for my own video. During the start of this video with the singer against the background I found that the starting shot made the video look very unprofessional- especially with the font choice that looked like a child's writing. As the video progresses I found it to be almost completely the same idea as the original music video by Tinie Tempah except at a lower quality. The lip syncing is not ideal either especially as 80% of the video is including a 'live performance'. However I did like how they used text messages as a form of dialogue instead of having a character actually speaking and interferring with the video.

Existing Student Music Video

This video was really good, he's used a lot of artistic shots to help with transitions between the live action and then singing. This is assisted by the very good quality of the camera which makes the video appear more professional overall. As well as that, he's selected successful actors to fit the serious roles where their clear emotions help make it seem more realistic. At the beginning of the music video there's longer shot duration's that fit with the pace of the song and as the song reaches it's chorus and the fight begins, the shot length's get's shorter to speed up the pace of the video to synchronise with the song. This video features a mixture of lip syncing, 'live performance' and narrative which are all very easy to understand and look really effective.

Existing Student Music Video

This video features numerous different editing skills and camera shots throughout the video, the wide range is something I want to echo in my video, however I found the lack of obvious narrative frustrating as it lacked meaning. By following the one character through the video is easily to follow through the simplistic idea which was executed well through the smooth editing skills.

Conventions of a music video

The conventions of a music video differ depending on the sort of genre; sometimes you will have a mix of live performance and narrative or one or the other. Quite common place is lip syncing in music videos. The House/electronic genre have very similar music videos, they tend to all have at least some element of live performance normally footage from a set or their last tour. If there is narrative used the story is normally based around youth and teenagers and mostly involve a young relationship. The pop genre almost always have lip syncing of the singer throughout the video with no narrative but a load of costume changes. These videos tend to focus on showing the artist and making them look a certain way normally sexually attractive, particularly with females. This is mainly because this artist has a large fan group and they are trying to promote themselves. Some videos mainly with groups have more elements of live performance for example The 1975.   Deep House tend to have

Brief

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, with the following: A digipak for the album's release A magazine advert for the album's release This is the brief for the music video option of the A2 coursework. I've chosen to do this over the short film and children's TV drama because I think I will enjoy this more and I am very into music. For this I was planning on working with Rosie; we have very similar interests and get on really well but we are good at different things and have different social circles. This will be good to split up parts of the coursework and to have a bigger range of contacts. This year I'm hoping to get a lot more enjoyment out of the work this year and produce a piece of work that I like rather than just fitting the criteria. I definitely think working with someone rather than alone like I did for A2 will make it more enjoyable. Last year I spent a lot of time on the editing and I want to do that again

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

In the preliminary task we used a camcorder, my Sony camera and a drone to film on. We did some handheld shots as well as using a tripod. For the editing I used premiere pro the 2015 version. Using a drone was good because we were able to get establishing and tracking shots that we couldn't get on a normal camera but the footage isn't as good quality. Premiere pro is a really good editing software which I downloaded on my own computer to edit the footage at home. I also downloaded a few light leaks and other software extras which means I can do more with the footage. I've learnt that getting your footage to match the peaks and pace of the song is actually really hard and we should have planned the shots so that they were more deliberate rather than just seeing what looked good at the location. Looking back we definitely should have spent longer organising and we should have arrange our filming days further in advance; this is because it was really hard to get actors at

Research of existing music videos - Dizzee Rascal - Bassline Junky

This is effective in using live performance and syncing the miming with the song lyrics throughout the entirety of the music video. After watching numerous student videos who have failed really bad in successfully syncing the miming, therefore during my music video any live performance I have will be minimalistic to prevent it from appearing out of time. This video lacks a narrative that's separate from the lyrics itself, watching the video without any sound it would be hard to get a story or what's relevant which is effective for this light hearted song but is not something I want to replicate in my video.

Research of existing music videos - DJ Fresh - gold dust

This video is effective because unlike with Chase & Status, during the chorus of the song which speeds up instantly, the shots remain long takes but the content (skipping) speeds up which remains in time with the song so works just as effectively as shorter takes in time with the music. The skipping controls the pace of the music video and shot lengths. The video involves a variety of ages and talents playing games but they're all very talented, I want to have actors with a similar talent level in  other sports . The video doesn't include many special effects apart from slow motion, which was effective with the skipping in capturing the expressions of each actor. While I feel this was very successful and I will try and re-capture that in my own video, I will try and include more effects to try and portray a wide range of skills.

Research of existing music videos - Chase & Status feat. Takura - No Problem

This video is successful despite the minimalistic props, actors, narrative etc.. The video is effective primarily due to the editing involved, the song uses longer shot duration during the verses to slow down the song. Whereas during the chorus as the song speeds up the shots become shorter with a variety of clips which help to portray the dancing element. Throughout the entire video there's different techniques in to make the video more interesting instead of just having a guy dressed in face paint dancing, the strobe light and ink design helps add intrigue and intensity to the video. By having a black background, with white, green, yellow etc. glow in the dark UV portrays similar lighting and appearance to that of a club or gig, which helps the viewers have a interpretation of how intense it would be in a crowd or a mosh pit.

Location Research

Skate Parks   Eaton park in Norwich would be an ideal location for filming with a skateboarder; it's outside and free so we could film at anytime. There would be a good atmosphere if we film when there are other skateboarders around.  We also looked out Beccles skate park which is similar to Eaton. The other option is to film at an inside skate park, for this we would need to get permission and it's likely to be a lot more busy which can be good or bad. The charge unit in Norwich could be good for this.   Ballet Studio   As the ballerina we have trains at the ARTS school our plan was to contact them and ask to film in one of their studios; also it would be really good to get some footage of her dancing with her class as well. The other option is to ask to use Judith Fox ballet studio which is in Wymondham and has a lot of students from the school so that might be willing to let us film there at a time when it's not being used. Boxing Club My friend

Video Diary 1

Decisions

I'm planning on completing the music video brief. I've made the decision to work on my own, this will be a lot of work but i will definitely prefer having sole ownership of the product and having a strong idea on what i want to do makes it hard to work with someone else. I've come to a agreement with one of my friends who is also working on her own that we will help each other with the filming and will meet up every week to discuss our ideas and help each other.

Edgar Wright

Like Wes Anderson, Wright has a unique style that's obvious in all his films. He tends to use close up shots to speed up a scene which is normally of a mundane action like, making a cup of tea. Editing the footage just to show specific details makes the scene a lot more interesting to the audience. Wright also likes using video transitions for example he often use camera pans to swipe from one scene to another this can make the scenes flow from one to the other and hide the cut.

Wes Anderson

The director Wes Anderson has a very iconic style which is consistent through all his films and has become his trademark so people recognise his films. One of Andersons' traits is to ignore the rule of third and always put his character in the centre of shot creating a symmetrical scene. Wes Anderson was linked to theatre, that's why some shots have a theatre like style and he favours long tracking shots which show the whole scene.

Evaluation Question 4 (preliminary Task)

We used multiple different media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluating stage. Firstly in the research stage we used mainly laptops/computers and the internet (specifically youtube and google images). We used this to firstly listen to the son and learn the lyrics, this was to try and spark an idea that could link to the song and its lyrics. We also used youtube to watch various other music videos from the same genre as the dafter dance so that we got a realistic idea of what real media products similar to ours looked like. We also used the internet to research possible areas in Norwich that we could use to create our media product. For the planning stage we all used the internet and laptops to finalise research our locations. We also used phones to contact our actors and arrange filming times. We also used cameras to take photos of our final locations once we had been to see them. In the construction stage we used video cameras to film our actual film

Evaluation Question 3 (Preliminary Task)

What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback? We received audience feedback from multiple students who we played or music video to.  The main thing we received in terms of feedback was that once the main character had transported to the different planet there wasn't much clear direction in terms of what was happening. Another big piece of feedback we received was that certain shots lasted too long. From the audience feedback me and my group have learnt that my shots should be much more varied to ensure that shots aren't to long and don't get boring for the audience. We would also need to include more camera techniques, such as whip pans, to make it more interesting. Also we would need to make sure there was more of a clear narrative to the video to ensure the audience didn't get confused. This would give the video more direction and story. We could do this by re filming the second half of the video and giving clear indications to the audience as to what is hap

Evaluation Question 2 (Preliminart Task)

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text (CD cover)? We feel that our CD cover links very well to our video as it shares the same name as our song for the music video. Not only this, but we chose to use a picture of our actor in costume with the tent used in the music video. This obviously directly links the two products to each other. We also chose to use text that was not necessarily formal-looking; more child-like and fun. This is quite an effective link as we imagine that the whole album would follow suit with the sound of The Safety Dance - this sound being upbeat and lighthearted. Therefore, it makes sense that the album cover be just as fun and bright. We matched the text colour to the colours used frequently in the video and the costume; for example, red. This also went some way to effectively linking the two products. Having said this, in retrospect, it may be more effective to create a more subtle link between the final product and the alb

Evaluation Question 1 (Preliminary Task)

In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products? In most real media products a child is presented as vulnerable, naïve and ignorant to the real world; a classic example would be Kevin from Home Alone. Our music video really takes advantage of and enhances this view. We use a lot of close ups to show the emotions on his face whether he's confused or scared. Also the fact that his emotions are really exaggerated and clear to see means that the audience is able to connect with the character more than others. For the first minute or so the shots are relatively close up making the viewer feel as if they are part of this characters journey, this is also done with the video transitions when there is a change of location. All these techniques are to present the child as innocent and free. Another convention we used was the representation of a child's imagination which is normally portrayed as illogical and sometimes weird

The Safety Dance - Final Cut (Preliminary Task)

1 Minute Draft (Preliminary Task)

Editing - Transitions (Preliminary Task)

A key part of our music video is when he appears at a different location so I spent some time adding cool transition effects to the footage. The first one is a dissolve and directional blur this doesn't quite have the flow I wanted because the shots were filmed on separate days meaning the camera angles are different. The second is a cross zoom, I prefer this one because it hides the cut between the shots a lot better making it almost seem like one take; this will be the one we use in the final cut.

Casting Ideas (Preliminary Task)

To cast our main character (a young boy dressed as a superhero) we all had a very clear idea of the type of actor we wanted. We wanted someone who was very cheeky and confident and that they could carry this over on camera. We very soon found two candidates who we though fitted this role very well. The two actors we casted for the role are: Toby Cooke - We felt Toby would be a good actor to cast for our main role as he was very cheeky and very confident. He is a very typical young boy and exactly what we were looking for. Reef Allen - Like Toby, Reef was extremely cheeky and confident and had a large imagination. As we wanted our character to be a very typical adventurous young boy, we felt that Reef also fitted this very well.

Shooting Schedule (Preliminary Task)

Day 1 Tuesday 5th July - We will shoot all the inside and garden footage at my house for about the first 45 seconds of the video. All three of us will be there and these shots are only of Toby so we don't need any extras. Day 2 Tuesday 12th July - This is for the main part of the music video and will be shot at Longs Wood. We have arranged to have a drone to film on and for 3 extras as well as Toby. Day 3 - Thursday 21st July - We will be filming the finale to the music video and any extra shots we need. For this we have managed to get 4 extras and Toby.

Final Plot Ideas (Preliminary Task)

This is our final plot ideas: The main character (a young boy) puts on his superhero mask and runs into his garden to get into his tent/den. The tent then transports him into another woodland world in which there will be others all dancing. In the middle of all the dancing and partying in the new forest the young boy will trip up/fall over in some way and as he hits the floor he will be transported back to his garden and outside the tent/den.  The boy will then realise he's back home and may be greeted by his mother asking wheres he been (that scene will be dependant on availability of actors). We tried to keep our idea as simplistic as possible, this was to ensure that we didn't over complicate the meaning of the video which is simply just about the young boy enjoying himself in his own imagination when he has the safety of his superhero costume on.

Plot Ideas (Preliminary Task)

We spent a lot of time debating and brainstorming ideas for our music video. From the start we knew we wanted to bring in some element of dance due to the nature of the song and obviously its title. Our basic premise is a young boy is playing in his den before he gets transported to another world. Here he meets various people dancing as he explores this new world. From here we developed and expanded our idea. For example, we decided we wanted the young boy to be dressed as a superhero: using 'the safety dance' as a means of protecting himself from evil. We also decided we wanted the den to be in a garden whilst the new world will be a forest and various locations within it. What happens and where the young boy goes in this new world is still being finalised. Some of the ideas for this section are as follows: He enters the new world and finds a party in a clearing and joins in, eventually being hit by confetti/party poppers/paint which cause him to fall and be transported back

Location Scout (Preliminary Task)

Once we came up with our idea we started discussing possible locations to film that fitted with the story and were accessible for us to film. Today I went on a location scout to Longs wood, which is in my local area to see if it would be suitable for our music video. As well as woods there's also some open fields and areas which would be useful if we can get a drone for some aerial shots; this will also offer a bit more diversity to the close up angles that we can film in the more wooded areas and on the small trails. There are some different sites within the wood like the stairs, bridge and some ponds which we could use to capture more interesting shots and make it seem like there's a few different locations. As it had rained over the previous days the paths were very muddy and waterlogged so we will have to consider the weather when creating our shooting schedule.

Research 3 (Preliminary Task)

Tears for Fears - head over heels doesn't have a similar storyline to our idea but it was produced at the same time as the safety dance so it is useful research for our music video. The story is pretty easy to understand the boy likes the girl, but the feelings aren't mutual. The video has a few strange elements, such as the monkey. The footage is a lot of long, close up shots that show the emotion on the singers face well; these we could use on the boy. On the editing side there's a lot of transitions like cross fading between shots, which we have talked about using to link the locations in the music video. The storyline has a definite ending, showing them in the future, this is going to be important for our music video so the story is explain and it all makes sense.

Format of our Music Video (Preliminary Task)

Our video will be in the form of a narrative. There won't be any live performance involved in the video or clips of the song being sung. This is because the song is a very upbeat song and so we felt it would be more effective to have a very full of energy, story-based narrative to accompany the song rather than break up the video between narrative and performance. Also, the fact that we had a very solid idea that we all agreed with and very much liked meant that we wanted to put that idea into full effect. We feel our idea is engaging enough to not need any live performance to accompany it.
