Setting

Setting is the place or surroundings where an event takes place. Setting in a music video can be anything from the roof of a skyscraper to a rural field.Settings are normally all linked by some sort of theme and can be used to show the passing of time.  Props are also part of setting they can be very important and tend to have some symbolic meaning. For example seeing a character holding a gun normally symbolises they have a violent background.

Conventional settings in a music video
Music videos usually have a few main settings that feature throughout the music video, they are normally always linked through a theme. For example Fifth Harmony's 'work from home' video is all shot around a building site and this is it's main setting. Sigma 'higher' video uses a mountain as it's main setting and represents reaching new limits, which is what the song is about. The settings often reflect the mood of the music video, e.g. dark settings with low natural light can be used to create a dark mood and a sense of mystery to draw you into the video. Neon lights are often used with this to make the setting more dramatic; this is evident in the music video for freal luv by Far East Movement  where lighting is used to distort the setting. Also in the video for Wretch 32 'blackout' where light is the main focus of the setting. Setting can be used to show the change in time for example in the music video for Borgeous and Shaun Frank's this could be love an establishing shot (right) is used to show a clear change in time from night to day, the settings are all based around a city.

The influence of genre on setting
Genre, I would say is a heavy influence on the setting of music videos. I would say typically for the pop genre setting isn't such an important focus for the video and this links to the fact there videos don't have a strong storyline either. For example videos for artists such as Ariana Grande focus more around her than anything else. This means the setting can be quite plain so the viewers attention is focused on the artist. For example little mix 'shout out to my ex' the settings aren't very relevant, the video is largely made up of close ups of the girls and the settings are just an excuse for a costume change.  Overall setting is very much influenced by genre so having a song choice decided, definitely helps with location ideas. All the song i have chosen are from a similar genres so the video won't look out of place if i pick certain songs.

Initial Ideas

I have to so initial ideas, they are similar ideas but based around two different songs. I like to mind map my ideas because this means i can link parts together and getting everything down on paper before I start adapting it. One of the main parts of mise en scene that I want to focus on more than the others is camera angles. This is going to be important especially to show the change in perspective between the characters. It will also give the video an edge.

Final Plot Ideas (Preliminary Task)

This is our final plot ideas: The main character (a young boy) puts on his superhero mask and runs into his garden to get into his tent/den. The tent then transports him into another woodland world in which there will be others all dancing. In the middle of all the dancing and partying in the new forest the young boy will trip up/fall over in some way and as he hits the floor he will be transported back to his garden and outside the tent/den.  The boy will then realise he's back home and may be greeted by his mother asking wheres he been (that scene will be dependant on availability of actors). We tried to keep our idea as simplistic as possible, this was to ensure that we didn't over complicate the meaning of the video which is simply just about the young boy enjoying himself in his own imagination when he has the safety of his superhero costume on.

Song Choice

These are the song choices I have thought of for the revised narrative of the music video.
