The conventions of a music video differ depending on the sort of genre; sometimes you will have a mix of live performance and narrative or one or the other. Quite common place is lip syncing in music videos.
The House/electronic genre have very similar music videos, they tend to all have at least some element of live performance normally footage from a set or their last tour. If there is narrative used the story is normally based around youth and teenagers and mostly involve a young relationship.
The pop genre almost always have lip syncing of the singer throughout the video with no narrative but a load of costume changes. These videos tend to focus on showing the artist and making them look a certain way normally sexually attractive, particularly with females. This is mainly because this artist has a large fan group and they are trying to promote themselves. Some videos mainly with groups have more elements of live performance for example The 1975.
