Arts

I asked a couple of girls in my year who I knew did ballet if they would be interested in performing in our music video, they said they would be happy to which was great. They are students at Arts school, so I decided to contact the school to ask whether we could film in one of their studios. In the space of a week I received a reply from Libby's teacher Vickie, who said it would be absolutely fine to use the studio after Libby's lesson. Me and Rosie thought it would be really good to have shots of our ballerina dancing with other girls and cut between shots of this and her on her own. So I set up a group chat on Facebook and asked Libby to add some people from her class; they were very happy to help. Filming date 31st October.

Video Diary 2

Existing Student Music Video

I thought it'd be important to research other student made music video's by the same artist - Tinie Tempah - who I'm hoping to use for my own video. During the start of this video with the singer against the background I found that the starting shot made the video look very unprofessional- especially with the font choice that looked like a child's writing. As the video progresses I found it to be almost completely the same idea as the original music video by Tinie Tempah except at a lower quality. The lip syncing is not ideal either especially as 80% of the video is including a 'live performance'. However I did like how they used text messages as a form of dialogue instead of having a character actually speaking and interferring with the video.

Existing Student Music Video

This video was really good, he's used a lot of artistic shots to help with transitions between the live action and then singing. This is assisted by the very good quality of the camera which makes the video appear more professional overall. As well as that, he's selected successful actors to fit the serious roles where their clear emotions help make it seem more realistic. At the beginning of the music video there's longer shot duration's that fit with the pace of the song and as the song reaches it's chorus and the fight begins, the shot length's get's shorter to speed up the pace of the video to synchronise with the song. This video features a mixture of lip syncing, 'live performance' and narrative which are all very easy to understand and look really effective.

Existing Student Music Video

This video features numerous different editing skills and camera shots throughout the video, the wide range is something I want to echo in my video, however I found the lack of obvious narrative frustrating as it lacked meaning. By following the one character through the video is easily to follow through the simplistic idea which was executed well through the smooth editing skills.

Conventions of a music video

The conventions of a music video differ depending on the sort of genre; sometimes you will have a mix of live performance and narrative or one or the other. Quite common place is lip syncing in music videos. The House/electronic genre have very similar music videos, they tend to all have at least some element of live performance normally footage from a set or their last tour. If there is narrative used the story is normally based around youth and teenagers and mostly involve a young relationship. The pop genre almost always have lip syncing of the singer throughout the video with no narrative but a load of costume changes. These videos tend to focus on showing the artist and making them look a certain way normally sexually attractive, particularly with females. This is mainly because this artist has a large fan group and they are trying to promote themselves. Some videos mainly with groups have more elements of live performance for example The 1975.   Deep House tend to have

Brief

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, with the following: A digipak for the album's release A magazine advert for the album's release This is the brief for the music video option of the A2 coursework. I've chosen to do this over the short film and children's TV drama because I think I will enjoy this more and I am very into music. For this I was planning on working with Rosie; we have very similar interests and get on really well but we are good at different things and have different social circles. This will be good to split up parts of the coursework and to have a bigger range of contacts. This year I'm hoping to get a lot more enjoyment out of the work this year and produce a piece of work that I like rather than just fitting the criteria. I definitely think working with someone rather than alone like I did for A2 will make it more enjoyable. Last year I spent a lot of time on the editing and I want to do that again

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

In the preliminary task we used a camcorder, my Sony camera and a drone to film on. We did some handheld shots as well as using a tripod. For the editing I used premiere pro the 2015 version. Using a drone was good because we were able to get establishing and tracking shots that we couldn't get on a normal camera but the footage isn't as good quality. Premiere pro is a really good editing software which I downloaded on my own computer to edit the footage at home. I also downloaded a few light leaks and other software extras which means I can do more with the footage. I've learnt that getting your footage to match the peaks and pace of the song is actually really hard and we should have planned the shots so that they were more deliberate rather than just seeing what looked good at the location. Looking back we definitely should have spent longer organising and we should have arrange our filming days further in advance; this is because it was really hard to get actors at

Research of existing music videos - Dizzee Rascal - Bassline Junky

This is effective in using live performance and syncing the miming with the song lyrics throughout the entirety of the music video. After watching numerous student videos who have failed really bad in successfully syncing the miming, therefore during my music video any live performance I have will be minimalistic to prevent it from appearing out of time. This video lacks a narrative that's separate from the lyrics itself, watching the video without any sound it would be hard to get a story or what's relevant which is effective for this light hearted song but is not something I want to replicate in my video.

Research of existing music videos - DJ Fresh - gold dust

This video is effective because unlike with Chase & Status, during the chorus of the song which speeds up instantly, the shots remain long takes but the content (skipping) speeds up which remains in time with the song so works just as effectively as shorter takes in time with the music. The skipping controls the pace of the music video and shot lengths. The video involves a variety of ages and talents playing games but they're all very talented, I want to have actors with a similar talent level in  other sports . The video doesn't include many special effects apart from slow motion, which was effective with the skipping in capturing the expressions of each actor. While I feel this was very successful and I will try and re-capture that in my own video, I will try and include more effects to try and portray a wide range of skills.

Research of existing music videos - Chase & Status feat. Takura - No Problem

This video is successful despite the minimalistic props, actors, narrative etc.. The video is effective primarily due to the editing involved, the song uses longer shot duration during the verses to slow down the song. Whereas during the chorus as the song speeds up the shots become shorter with a variety of clips which help to portray the dancing element. Throughout the entire video there's different techniques in to make the video more interesting instead of just having a guy dressed in face paint dancing, the strobe light and ink design helps add intrigue and intensity to the video. By having a black background, with white, green, yellow etc. glow in the dark UV portrays similar lighting and appearance to that of a club or gig, which helps the viewers have a interpretation of how intense it would be in a crowd or a mosh pit.

Location Research

Skate Parks   Eaton park in Norwich would be an ideal location for filming with a skateboarder; it's outside and free so we could film at anytime. There would be a good atmosphere if we film when there are other skateboarders around.  We also looked out Beccles skate park which is similar to Eaton. The other option is to film at an inside skate park, for this we would need to get permission and it's likely to be a lot more busy which can be good or bad. The charge unit in Norwich could be good for this.   Ballet Studio   As the ballerina we have trains at the ARTS school our plan was to contact them and ask to film in one of their studios; also it would be really good to get some footage of her dancing with her class as well. The other option is to ask to use Judith Fox ballet studio which is in Wymondham and has a lot of students from the school so that might be willing to let us film there at a time when it's not being used.
