Swan Lake - Summary

Often considered the epitome of classical ballets, Swan Lake is a tale of love, betrayal, and the triumph of good over evil. Swan Lake tells the story of Odette, a young girl doomed by an evil sorcerer. A spell is cast over her, condemning her to be a swan during the day and a human only at night. Odette is the queen of the swans, the most beautiful of all. In order to break the spell, a young man must acclaim his undying love for her.

Chronological Key History of music video

1930  - Music started to be used in films and to make the experience of watching the film more enjoyable, this was the first sort of music videos that where seen, however are very different to the music videos that we have become used to today. 1940  - Short lips with music where showed on TV that featured jazz bands of the time, this is the first live performance style music video that  where shown and are partially the inspiration for both music videos and adverts we see today. 1965  - The beetles began releasing promotional music videos before the latest releases to help promote sales of the album. This is an early example of using extra footage to increase profit making the industry about more than just the music and performance. 1974  - MTV was released, the first time a channel dedicated to just music videos was shown on television and at the time was the only way that people viewed music videos, this channel shaped a generation and opened peoples eyes ...

Casting

Name: Abigail Lewis  Age: 17 Abigail is a dancer and very good at ballet. She is the right age for the role and also does drama which means she will be natural on camera. However Abigail has a lot of dance auditions and rehearsals at the weekend and this means it is very hard to arrange dates to film and more of an inconvenience for her.  Name: Libby Miller Age: 18 Libby also does ballet at the same dance school as Abigail. She has the perfect figure for a ballerina and I think she would suit the role really well.  Libby doesn't do drama but she has performed in a previous short film i did and she was really confident on camera so I definitely think she would be able to get into character. This is why I have chosen Libby.

Existing Narrative

zA narrative is an account of connected events also known as a story. In music videos narratives are shorter and therefore tend to be simpler. In music videos the narrative normally focuses on a few key events of the story rather than the whole story and uses setting and costume to show the passing of time. Narrative in Genre: In this video we see a girl and boy in high school who like each other but don't admit it because they are different. In the video we see only a few key scenes the match, prom and the house to tell the story. In most videos of a romantic genre to young adults meet and have some sort of connection before at the end reaching an ultimatum. The genre of this video is family and relationships. There isn't a deep narrative to the video but it shows many different stories that reflect very varying relationships. This song is very emotional and the video uses this to promote family. Probably the most iconic MJ music video is Thriller....

Existing Performers

In music videos performers are very important. The video is normally used to promote the artist as well as the song, so the persona of the artist and the genre have a big influence on the video. Marshmello Marshmello isn't a very well known artist or performer as he's just entered the music scene, but he has a very clear unique identity from the way he appears and dresses in his videos. As a dj its very hard to separate yourself from the crowd so having your own identity makes you recognisible anywhere. Most djs, including him create their own logo to represent them, for example Aviciis' two triangles this then appears on merchandise, in their music videos and on their albums. Marshmello's videos are normally based around his skills as a dj so in that sense he definitely adds to the narrative but i wouldn't say he engages with the audience alot. Foxes Foxes is a singer and she features in all their music videos. These videos tend to have a lot more narrative a...

MadderMarket theatre

I've contacted several theatres in Norwich over the past few weeks to see if their stage is available to film on. Most have been too busy because it's the run up to Christmas; but after one theatre directed me to Rebecca at Maddermarket we exchanged a few emails and have arranged a date to film there. The stage is an important location for my ballerina as there's going to be an important scene where she is imagining herself perform while practising.

Video Diary 3

Setting

Setting is the place or surroundings where an event takes place. Setting in a music video can be anything from the roof of a skyscraper to a rural field.Settings are normally all linked by some sort of theme and can be used to show the passing of time.  Props are also part of setting they can be very important and tend to have some symbolic meaning. For example seeing a character holding a gun normally symbolises they have a violent background. Conventional settings in a music video Music videos usually have a few main settings that feature throughout the music video, they are normally always linked through a theme. For example Fifth Harmony's 'work from home' video is all shot around a building site and this is it's main setting. Sigma 'higher' video uses a mountain as it's main setting and represents reaching new limits, which is what the song is about. The settings often reflect the mood of the music video, e.g. dark settings with low natural light ca...

Boxer

My other main character is a boxer around the same age, she is similar to the ballerina in that boxing is her escape. She is in similar circumstances as she feels the need to prove herself through doing well in her sport. With a very important match coming up she is fighting as the underdog for her first tittle. Her parents not being over pleased with her constant training and addiction to boxing, she believes winning this match will prove it's worthwhile.

Ballerina

One of my main characters is a girl about the age of 18, who aspires to be a professional ballet dancer. In the music video she is under a lot of pressure as she is auditioning for the main part in a show for a major ballet company. You she her go through a period of self criticism and competition to achieve her goal. The process pushes her to new limits and its only her love of ballet that keeps her going. It becomes her escape and the only way she can truly express herself.

Footage

For my music video I've decided the whole thing will be based on a narrative so there will be no live performance or lip syncing. The video will be driven by the story line and the songs purpose is to compliment this.

Song Choice

I haven't been focused on choosing a song at the moment, for the video the narrative is the most important so I've been spending my time developing my characters and storyline and I want the song to reinforce the message of the video not the other way around. However I do have a few songs in mind that fit with the narrative. This song already has a strong narrative in the lyrics and because of this I would have to change my idea slightly so it just focused on the ballerina. This song is slower than I initially wanted but it is really emotional which is what I like about it. This song really caught my attention, it is very emotional but can be interpreted differently. The lyrics find me could relate to the characters expressing themselves through their sport so it definitely links to the story. This song isn't as slow as ballerina but has a good mix which will be great for sequences of short shots. This was my original song choice and my initial ideas all came fr...

Southpaw training Montage

In the music video there will be a section where the boxer is training on her own. In many boxing films there is iconic training montages, one I watched recently was Southpaw. In this I really like the shots where camera angles are used to create a contrast between the natural light and him as a black silhouette. Also the shot with the quick bag which is identical to the one in the famous Rocky training montage. The camera also focuses on smaller details such as his feet or face and uses pull focus which all make the sequence interesting to watch.

Initial Ideas

I have to so initial ideas, they are similar ideas but based around two different songs. I like to mind map my ideas because this means i can link parts together and getting everything down on paper before I start adapting it. One of the main parts of mise en scene that I want to focus on more than the others is camera angles. This is going to be important especially to show the change in perspective between the characters. It will also give the video an edge.

Attleborough Boxing club

Last week I went to Attleborough boxing club to see if it would be suitable as a film location. I spoke to the head coach and manager, Jon who was very helpful and introduce me to someone called Levi Dennis, who has started full time training and is the same age as us. He said he was happy to be filmed training at the gym but when I asked if he would be up for filming outside of the gym in his spare time he didn't seem so keen. The gym itself is perfect for the type of location we wanted, with the gym and outside areas we can get lots of footage. One problem I did notice was that the lighting wasn't very dramatic and for a match low key lighting would be good to give the footage more of an edge. We will probably look in to supplying our own lights. Jon also invited us to film at Connaught hall on the 19th of November when the club is hosting 18 bouts of boxing. This would be really good footage to use for the music video so me and Rosie are planning to go.
